Public Transport
The public transport system in St. Petersburg includes trolleybuses, buses and trams which altogether make very developed and rather efficient transport network. Still in rush hours public transport is often overcrowded and it doesn’t work at nights (runs from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.).
All the types of Saint Petersburg public transport are rather cheap – 60 rubles a single trip (~80 cents). Minibuses called «marshrutka» are around 50 rubles per one ride. We recommend to tourists who are going to stay in the city for a long time (a month or more) and who plan to use public transport quite often to purchase a travel card allowing to save good money on trips around the city.
Fare is usually collected by a conductor or by a driver himself – in such cases the entrance is only through the front door.
Tram system in St. Petersburg is one of the largest in the world, but most of tram routes cover districts outside the city center. You can find a tram stop by a sign with a letter T on the wires over rails.
Trolleybuses run all around the city and many routes pass through the city center. Signs with a letter T located on poles identify the trolleybus stops.
Saint Petersburg buses are very popular because of their mobility, relatively high speed and a wide choice of routes in any directions including the city center. There are regular buses and minibuses («marshrutki») which can vary in size, comfort and cost of a trip. You can find bus stops by signs with a letter A.
