Some people call Peterhof “the Capital of Fountains”, other call it “the Eighth Wonder of the World” – why not visit it yourself and make your own opinion?
The site for the summer residence and fountain gardens was chosen personally by Peter I. The tsar made the first sketches and drawings of the site himself, and headed the official opening ceremony in August 1723. The complex was significantly enlarged during the reign of his daughter Elizabeth who loved to entertain her guests with masquerades held around the fountains, which were illuminated by gargantuan firework. Enjoy a tour through the Upper and Lower gardens, and try to count all of the 150 fountains and cascades. Visit the Monplaisir palace to see how the tsar really lived or the Grottoes to discover the secret of the unique fountain system which has been preserved since the time of Peter the Great.
