On December 7th, 1769, Russian Empress Catherine II established the Order of Saint George for awarding officers for the valiancy on the battlefield. The Order had 4 degrees. More than 10.000 officers were awarded, but only 23 of them had the Order of St. George of the First class; only 4 were the Cavaliers of the all 4 degrees. The Order was abolished in 1917 after the October revolution and revived in 2000 as a Military award of the Russian Federation.
