St. Petersburg was founded by the Decree of Peter I on May 27th, 1703. Now every year, on May 27th in St. Petersburg, City Day is celebrated.
This year, St. Petersburg celebrates yet another anniversary – 315 years. This means that residents and visitors of the city await a particularly bright and rich festival program. As per tradition, the Day of the City begins with the laying of flowers at the monument of Peter I on Senate Square at 10 am. Parades of ships, a masquerade procession with orchestras and drummers and a festival of circus art are all planned. A parade of retro transport will also take place on Nevsky Prospekt. In 2018, the XXII International Festival of Decorative and Applied Arts “The Salt Town – City of Masters” will be held with master classes by glass blowers, blacksmiths, artists, fashion designers and sculptors.
A ball of nationalities will be held at the Spit of Vasilievsky Island. This concert involves more than 20 national bands and performers. Ethnic crafts, musical instruments and cuisine will also be exhibited. All those who wish to can be photographed with representatives of the peoples of Russia and the world, all in ethnic costumes.
In the Summer Gardens, in its Central Alley, there will be an open-air “I draw Petersburg”, where on specially installed easels, everyone will be able to draw something that was especially impressive to them in St. Petersburg.
The Ice Cream festival – it isn’t a holiday without it! On Saturday and Sunday 26th and 27th May at the festival, you can try dozens of kinds of ice delicacies from different manufacturers as well as participate in competitions, listen to music and just simply have a wonderful time.
Closer to the finale, the action will move to Palace Square. In this beautiful open-air hall, a grand show for all residents and guests of Petersburg, “Classics at Dvortsovaya” will be organised. The project involved stars of the Russian and world opera scene, ballet dancers, famous musicians as well as composers. The concert starts at 21:00 and admission is free.
Naturally, the final “chord” of the holiday will be a magnificent military salute!
