The Hermitage Theater: Three Choreographers

Theatre of the Hermitage, St.Petersburg

On February 13, the stage of the Hermitage Theater will host three one-act ballets by Nacho Duato, Ivan Vasilyev and Roy Assaf. The artists of the Mikhailovsky Theater will present three different facets of contemporary choreography.

“The Hermitage Evenings of the Mikhailovsky Theater” have become a beautiful tradition, which this time will bring together three different modern choreographers: the Spanish master Nacho Duato, the brilliant dancer Ivan Vasilyev and the young but already famous Israeli choreographer Roy Assaf. Their performances, already well known to fans of the creative partnership between the Hermitage and the Mikhailovsky Theater, have never been presented in such a contrasting combination. We invite you to spend the evening in the company of three choreographers, each of whom speaks his own language through his art.

The ballet “In the Forest” staged by Nacho Duato is a performance about the spontaneous power of human feelings, freedom of wild nature and the metaphor of its endless cycle. This critically acclaimed masterpiece of modern choreography for more than two decades does not lessen in comparison to leading ballet theatres in Europe. Duato’s plastic language easily grasps, through the dancers’ bodies, the level of intuition needed to reveal man’s seemingly disproportionate elements and truths.

“Morphine” by Ivan Vasiliev is based on the play with the same name by Mikhail Bulgakov. The play tells the story of a fatal dependence that turns the life of the main character into a terrible dream. In it, he is captured by something that dissolves in itself all his feelings and desires and this becomes the sole goal of its existence.

“Gamma” – the world premiere of this ballet was held in December 2017 on the stage of the Hermitage Theater as part of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the birth of composer Oleg Karavaichuk. “Gamma” is choreographed by Roy Assaf. This is a philosophical fantasy, brought to life by genius music. The music inspired the choreographer to create a mini-performance for three dancers, in which each way of the men go about their life, how they overcome its trials and obstacles, as well as suffering and pain, how they go from great passion to fading without hope, how they need both friendship and rivalry.

A ballet evening is an ideal end, even for a very busy day in Petersburg, so hurry up to collect a suitcase and do not forget the “little black dress”, and we will help plan excursions and, of course, buy tickets!
