Don`t believe those telling that museum is a boring place. The Hermitage knows how to entertain you the way that even Catherine the Great would have appreciated it. A Golden bird was acquired by her favourite man in England. This was not just a shining souvenir but the complicated mechanism where all the details moved and chimed when turned. It is still working! In order to see the unique mechanical toy of the 18th century – the Peacock Clock – come any Wednesday 7pm and make sure the Hermitage has so much to offer you!
Interesting fact: The Peacock clock arrived to Russia disassembled, damaged and without any spare parts. The bags with details were delivered to Ivan Kulibin, Russian mechanic and inventor. Being talented and smart he managed to repair the Peacock and renewed the mechanism which still runs “like clockwork”.

On October 18th, 1907, a trial flight of omnibus-motor (prototype of the modern bus) took place in St.Petersburg. The route of 2 km along Nevsky Prospect from Znamenskaya Square to the Admiralty was overcome in 9 minutes. Soon, the new-type vehicles launched to the streets but sometimes faced difficulties because of the low power of engines: a filled omnibus could not cross even a small curved bridge. In such cases the passengers had to hop-off and hop-on again after the bridge. The first buses were one- and two-story vehicles, equipped with gasoline engines from thirty to forty horsepower and could carry 26 passengers.
“Yesterday, several buses (omnibuses) appeared on Nevsky for the first time. The crews are very graceful and moved with great velocity. The unfortunate horses looked at them with some envy” – a St. Petersburg newspaper wrote.
