The Catherine Palace is the highlight of your visit to St.Petersburg. Lavish and refined, sumptuous and elegant at the same time, this is a unique monument of the High Russian Baroque period reflecting the Empress’s flamboyant lifestyle. Here it is so easy to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of festiveness. Badly damaged during the WWII it was completely restored after.
Interesting fact: The Catherine palace was built for… Elisabeth! Neither of Catherine who ruled the country could appreciate the beauty. Catherine I owned the plot of land and had a small hounting lodge there, Catherine II did not like baroque style at all but to save on costs, she ordered to redesign a few rooms to live in and preserved gold in the State Halls.
