This American group from Los Angeles formed in 2005 are pioneers of their own genre: rap-rock. Regardless of polarizing reviews, they have since conquered the music industry Stateside as well as here in Russia with their unconventional style. Hollywood Undead have against all odds gained world-wide popularity, eventually reaching platinum status.
Although formed in 2005 and gaining immediate and unrivalled popularity with mainstream audiences thanks to the social media website MySpace, their first album “Swan Songs” was not released until 2008 due to great difficulty finding a record label that would praise their do-it-yourself style and independence and not censor them. After signing with MySpace Records, they later left the label due to creative differences and disagreement over censorship. Although notorious for their explicit lyrics and wild behaviour, much like bands such as Slipknot, they are also known for the masks they use. Whether it is in music videos, photo shoots or performances they are never seen without them and although each mask is unique to the performer, they are all modelled on the hockey goaltender design making for rather eerie and emotionless signature style.
Made up of six band members, Charlie Scene, J-Dog, Da Kurlz, Deuce, Funny Man, and Johnny 3 Tears, these young Americans live by the “live fast, die young” mentality, a very self-centered, even egotistical, way of life, signing about enjoying hedonistic pleasures and the importance of “bro-core mentality”. Although their songs are scattered with profanity, this should not take away from the fact that they combine their different musical backgrounds to create quality writing and talented musical compositions.
With layered vocals, singing and rapping, dynamic guitars and an energetic use of 80’s style synths, the band keeps to the much-loved classicality of rock and rap but adds novelty and ingenuity to create very a catchy, chaotic and unrivalled new sound.
Although at first seeming like your average white-trash, thug-like, American band, Hollywood Undead makes this label work for them.
